Brachypelma albiceps Info/Care

  • Name: Brachypelma albiceps
  • Common Name: Mexican Golden Red Rump
  • Genus: Brachypelma
  • Family: Theraphosidae
  • Year of Discovery: 1903

  • Habitat: Scrubland and grassland (Terrestrial)
The Brachypelma albiceps is an opportunistic burrower, in my experience specially as tiny slings.

  • Temperament: The Brachypelma albiceps is considered to be one of the more docile species, but always remember that individual tarantulas can display different behaviors.
My albiceps has always been very calm and docile, it has never flicked hairs at me or given me a threat posture.

  • Growth Rate: Medium
  • Adult Size: From what I've read they grow to around 6 inches (15.24 cm)
  • Temperature: 60-85°F (15.5-29.4°C)
  • Humidity: 50-60% (I overflow the water bowl from time to time, my albiceps likes really dry substrate)

  • Enclosure: The most important when it comes to terrestrial species is not to give them an enclosure that is too high, since a fall can severely harm them. Since this species is an opportunistic burrower, make sure to give them plenty of substrate to allow them to burrow if they wish to do so.
Always provide a hide for your tarantulas, a flower pot will do just fine.
A water bowl is another key thing that you will need to provide, don´t believe people that tell you that tarantulas don´t drink from a water bowl, they do.

In my own experience with this species I've noticed that they stay a lot calmer if they don´t have too much space around them, so providing other decorations such as real or fake plants will also make them feel more at ease.

  • Lifespan: Females can live up to 15-20 years, while males have a much shorter lifespan (around 5 years)
  • Experience Level: Beginner

  • Substrate: I keep most of my tarantulas on coco fiber (Eco-Earth) sometimes I mix in vermiculite for the species that need more humidity. But this is something you can experiment with to find the mixture that works the best for you, just make sure that what you choose is safe for your tarantula.

The Brachypelma albiceps is endemic to the central highlands of Mexico.
With it´s jet black legs and pale orange carapace it´s definitely one of the most beautiful Brachypelma species out there (in my opinion).

The Brachypelma albiceps is an excellent beginner species, it´s a hardy and docile species.
It´s very easy to care for, I've never experienced any issues with mine.

I could definitely recommend this species to beginners as well as more experienced keepers.
